Weight and type 2 diabetes: What losing weight can do for you.

According to recent statistics, over 1.7 million Australians and 250,000 New Zealanders are suffering from type 2 diabetes. The scariest part is, that’s not all of them.

Many people go undiagnosed, around 100,000 more. Carrying excess weight is intrinsically linked to type 2 diabetes risk or disease progression. Maintaining a healthy weight is key to both preventing the disease and aiding its management.

When your BMI (Body Mass Index) is above 30, your risk of developing type 2 diabetes increases. If it stays above 30, your management of the disease becomes much harder. Weight loss of about 5-10% of your total body weight has shown significant improvements in reducing your risk of Developing the disease and managing your blood sugars.


How do I lose weight?


 

By eating a healthy balanced diet, rich in whole food you can decrease your blood sugars and weight. Focusing on plant foods such as fruits and vegetables with whole grains, lean meats and low fat dairy is your best weapon. Be very mindful of your intake of foods high in sugars, salt and saturated fats. Slow down, listen to your body and your hunger cues. Learn to taste every mouthful and watch your portion sizes.
