Vehicles with automatic headlights can be turned on and off manually by the driver, if desired, with the vehicle’s controls. But if the driver chooses to have the headlights operate automatically as by default (this setting is usually marked ‘auto’), then they have to be quick and smart enough to get the job done for the driver.
These sensors tend to rely on the ambient light level rather than the visibility perceived by the driver. For this reason, the automatic headlights may decide to come on when the driver thinks they are not necessary. dipped headlights
Dipped headlights are the most used headlights; brighter than taillights, but not as bright as high-beam headlights.
They get their name because they are angled downwards towards the road. The button to turn them on is usually located on a dashboard dial or bent instrument arm, but many newer cars have running lights that operate without input from the driver.
When to use dipped headlights
The highway code says “You should use the headlights when visibility is severely reduced” and “seriously reduced” is defined as when you can see less than 100 meters ahead.
This means that they must be opened at night and in bad weather.
